Updates On My Progress

I can not believe that it has been two years since I have added anything to this blog. I have been busy teaching online courses for those two years. I enjoy the format immensly. I am adding a new course to my list this semester. I now teach Child Growth and Development, Nutrition Health and Safety for Children and Child Family and Community online.

I have also initiated and focused on a blog to support my students as they leave the academic environment and move into the work environment. Many students become disappointed with others in the field who let the knowledge they gained in coursework fall by the wayside.

Online Coursework

In the past I have taken three classes as a student online. I was often frustrated because I was trying to develop the computer skills along with trying to learn the material for the course. Many times I thought the deadlines were a bit unreasonable as well.

This semester I am teaching two online courses. I have enjoyed creating my own shell for the course rather than using the publisher provided version. It does take a lot of time though. I have also enjoyed responding to my student introduction emails but with almost one hundred students that has been quite a time consuming endeavor. I do think that I will know more about these students that I would in a traditional on campus class of this size.

In addition, I have created a professional blog and hope to bring together my on campus students with my online students for discussions. I am hoping extra credit will motivate them to participate. I can see some real value for the younger students for whom technology is second nature and for the quiet and reserved students who might not participate with one on one spoken language communication.

Becoming Familiar with the Process

At a conference focusing on online activities this week I discovered the value of blogging in today's world. I am using this blog to experiment with personally before I create a professional blog. My daughter opened up this possibility for me with the blog she set up for her family.
